NEW YORK (Kashmir English): Pakistan and Micronesia (a country spread across the western Pacific Ocean comprising more than 600 islands) in the western Pacific have formally established diplomatic relations.
Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmed, and the Permanent Representative of the Federated States of Micronesia, Ambassador Jim S. Lipway, signed a joint declaration in New York, formalizing the relationship between the two countries.
The signing ceremony was held at the Pakistan Mission to the United Nations, which was attended by diplomats from both countries, including Pakistan’s Deputy Permanent Representative Ambassador Usman Jadoon.
Speaking on the occasion, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmed said that he was very happy that the diplomatic relations between the two countries were being established on the occasion of Pakistan’s Independence Day.
He said that these relations would open new avenues of cooperation in areas such as human resource management, capacity building and climate change.
Asim Iftikhar Ahmed added that the missions of both countries would closely cooperate on important issues, including the promotion of international peace and security at the United Nations.
He expressed happiness that Pakistan is the 100th country with which the Federated States of Micronesia has established relations.
On the other hand, Ambassador Jim S. Lipway expressed happiness at the beginning of a new chapter in bilateral relations.
He said that it is an honor for him to represent his country and officially begin this journey of friendship and partnership with Pakistan.
He thanked Pakistan for its support in opening the United Nations offices in his country and said that he looks forward to working with his Pakistani counterpart to further strengthen the ties of friendship.
He also extended greetings on the occasion of Pakistan’s Independence Day.
Before the ceremony, a brief meeting was held between the two ambassadors, in which matters of mutual interest, including possible cooperation at bilateral and UN forums, were discussed.
