ISLAMABAD (Kashmir English): Islamic State-Khorasan Province (ISIL-K) has suffered a major setback as Pakistani intelligence agencies have arrested the organisation’s spokesperson, Sultan Aziz Azam.
The development was revealed in the sixteenth report of the Analytical Support and Sanctions Monitoring Team, submitted to the United Nations Security Council.
The report stated that Pakistani authorities have made several high-profile arrests against ISIL-K, including the arrest of Azam on May 16, 2025.
Sultan Aziz Azam was the founder of the organization’s official media wing, Al-Azam Foundation, which is considered the central organization for ISIS-K’s recruitment and propaganda activities.
According to the security sources, media activities of ISIS-K have also been suspended following Aziz Aizam’s arrest. As per details, Azam had also been an advisor to the Nangarhar Provincial Council before entering the media.
It further said that key commanders and ideological leaders of the terrorist organisation have been neutralised. “The arrest of Sultan Aziz Izzam and senior leader Ozgur Altun, known as Abu Yasir Al-Turki, in mid-2025 has significantly reduced the organization’s operational strength.”
The arrest of Abu Yasir, a key figure in the group’s media and logistical operations, may have contributed to the suspension of important propaganda platforms, ‘Voice of Khorasan’, the report stated.
The UN Security Council report added that Pakistan’s actions have weakened the organizational structure of ISIS Khorasan on a global scale. Several planned attacks have been thwarted, while the number of the organization’s fighters has decreased, it stated.
