NDMA issues new monsoon rain spell, flood, landslide alert

ISLAMABAD (Kashmir English): The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued an alert regarding monsoon rains and potential floods in various areas of the country from July 2 to 8, 2025.

According to the notification, heavy rains are expected in Azad Kashmir, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, and northeastern Punjab from July 5 to 8.

There is a risk of increased water flow in the Kabul River at Nowshera and flash floods in associated streams and nullahs. Due to the increased water flow in Tarbela Dam, there is a possibility of a low-level flood situation.

Rain may cause floods

In Gilgit-Baltistan and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, there is a risk of floods due to glacial lake outbursts, landslides, and floods in low-lying areas.

Urban flooding is expected in Lahore, Sialkot, and Narowal, while increased water flow is anticipated in the hill torrents of D.G. Khan and Rajanpur.

The NDMA has advised general public to stay away from weak constructions, mud walls, electricity poles, and billboards during rain and strong winds.

It further said that visibility may also decrease during dust storms which can cause accidents. Water flow in local streams and nullahs can suddenly increase due to rains, the alert said warning residents to be cautious.

The NDMA has issued instructions to all concerned departments to ensure that proactive measures are taken to deal with any potential emergency.

Meanwhile, the Disaster Management Authority Punjab has issued an alert regarding an increase in water levels in all major rivers of the province.

The alert issued by PDMA stated that there is a risk of increased water levels in all major rivers and their associated streams and nullahs from July 7.

The PDMA spokesperson said that a powerful spell of monsoon rains is predicted to begin in Punjab from July 6, while there is also a risk of flash flooding in the Dera Ghazi Khan Division.

The spokesperson stated that there are also fears of urban flooding in major cities due to monsoon rains, while landslides may occur in the areas of Murree and Galiyat.

DG PDMA Irfan Ali Kathia has also directed Deputy Commissioners across the province to remain alert.
