ISLAMABAD (Kashmir English): A high-level National Security Committee Meeting is currently underway in Islamabad, chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, to assess India’s recent aggressive actions following the deadly Pahalgam incident in India-occupied Kashmir.
The meeting includes Pakistan’s top civil and military leadership and is focused on formulating a response to the rapidly escalating situation.
According to state broadcaster Radio Pakistan, the national security committee meeting is deliberating on both internal and external developments in light of what Pakistani officials have termed a “false flag operation” in Pahalgam.
The attack claimed the lives of over two dozen people and has since sparked a series of provocative actions from New Delhi.
In the aftermath of the attack, India took several drastic steps, including suspending the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT), downgrading diplomatic relations, and shutting border transit routes.
Indian media also reported that the Pakistani government’s X (formerly Twitter) account has been blocked within India, and Pakistan’s charge d’affaires in New Delhi was summoned.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi vowed to pursue the perpetrators “to the ends of the Earth,” despite offering no evidence of Pakistani involvement.
Meanwhile, Pakistani leaders strongly rejected the accusations, calling them baseless and politically motivated. Islamabad expressed condolences for the loss of life and criticised the Indian response as a form of “water warfare.”
The suspension of the IWT is being viewed as the most significant of India’s measures. Signed in 1960 and brokered by the World Bank, the treaty has withstood decades of conflict and even wars between the two nations. Its unilateral suspension by India marks a serious turning point in already strained relations.
The current National Security Committee meeting is also expected to address growing concerns over the reported harassment and intimidation of Kashmiri students in India following the Pahalgam incident.
In a statement, the Prime Minister’s Office said that “important decisions are expected,” pointing to India’s “unilateral and reckless actions.”
According to Radio Pakistan, the committee will take a close look at India’s behavior in the aftermath of what many in Pakistan believe was a false flag operation.
