ISLAMABAD (Kashmir English): NADRA’s clarification was issued on Monday, explaining who is responsible for birth, death, and marriage record updates after a viral video showed a man shocked by his false death entry.
The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has officially clarified recent rumours regarding birth, death, and marriage registrations, explaining the proper legal process to the public.
According to NADRA, any changes in birth, death, or marital status must first be registered through the relevant Union Council, as this process falls under provincial laws.
NADRA only issues identity documents based on the information it receives from these councils, in line with federal laws.
This clarification comes after a video went viral on social media showing a man expressing shock at being listed as deceased in NADRA’s records.
NADRA explained that the man’s death was officially registered by a close relative at the Union Council, which led to the change in his status in NADRA’s system.
NADRA stressed that the responsibility for recording such life events lies entirely with Union Councils. The authority only updates or cancels ID documents based on these official records.
So far, over 7 million deaths have been registered across the country through Union Councils. However, in many cases, families have failed to update this information with NADRA, which means the deceased person’s ID card is still active.
NADRA leads the initiative by delivering SMS alert messages for both incident victims and their blood relatives.
A closest blood relative must come to the NADRA office to cancel the card after validating the person has actually died. Family members need to approach their relevant Union Council to resolve any mistakes found in a death entry.
NADRA requests all citizens to keep their family records updated through their local Union Council plus NADRA platforms so future legal and confusion issues can be avoided.
