ISLAMABAD (Kashmir English): The government of Pakistan is set to introduce a drastic shift for car owners in Pakistan, as the “My Car My Number” policy will connect the registration number of every vehicle with the owner’s CNIC, putting an end to confusion and racketeering.
Director General of Excise and Taxation, Lahore, Umar Sher Chatha, cautioned that if one does not shift their vehicle before September 1, they will lose the number to the earlier owner.
Car numbers will now be associated with the owner, not the vehicle, and ensure that complete records remain attached to ID Cards under a new, robust system.
Even second-hand car purchasers will not be excluded, and a fresh number will be made available for a nominal charge. People can book a number for two years and then keep it vacant, without having to purchase a vehicle, but after that period, it will lapse.
Authorities maintain that this radical step will curb forgery, enhance security, and generate extra government income, rendering car ownership more secure and transparent than ever.
Exice unveiled a comprehensive restructuring of car registration in Pakistan, affirming that the registration costs will go up from September 1. Vehicle owners are encouraged to finish all transfers on time in order to avoid extra fees.
With the new system, the registration number of every vehicle is to be linked to the CNIC of the owner and not to the vehicle itself. This implies that the old owner retains the number when selling a car or motorcycle, whereas used-vehicle buyers are issued a fresh registration number by the Motor Registration Authority.
Unused registration numbers may be booked for a maximum of two years, but any registration after a one-month lag will cost an additional fee from September 1.
Vehicle owners who have not yet registered their purchased vehicles in their name are requested to report at the earliest through 1035. The system is designed to make traffic management easier, enhance record-keeping, and improve security.
