Member AJK Election Commission Syed Nazir-Ul-Hasan Gilani visits Mirpur office

MIRPUR (Kashmir English): Member Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Election Commission Syed Nazir-Ul-Hasan Gilani visited the District Election Commission Office in Mirpur to discuss local preparations for the upcoming general elections 2026 in AJK.

The visit of EC member Gillani was followed by a review meeting to improve the performance of field staff during the polls to the 53-member AJK Legislative Assembly.

AJK Election Commission officials said the Member of the Election Commission appreciated the suggestions given by Assistant Election Commissioner Mirpur, Usman Muneer Chaudhry, and directed him to submit a detailed report based on his proposals to make the voter registration and election process transparent and peaceful.

AJK Election Commission was created under article 50 of Interim Constitution, with Chief Election Commissioner as Chairman and two members.

According to sub article (7) of article 50, it has been the duty of the Commission to organize and conduct the election for the office of the President, the Assembly, the Council and local government bodies and to make such arrangements as are necessary to ensure that the election is conducted honestly, justly, fairly and in accordance with the law.

Terms of the office for the Chief Election Commissioner and Members have been fixed as five years.
