PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government will immediately send medical teams with essential medical supplies to help the earthquake victims in Afghanistan, KP Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur said on Monday.

A 6.0 magnitude earthquake overnight hit Afghanistan’s mountainous eastern border region, so far killing more than 800 people and injuring at least 2,800. The authorities described the quake as one of the deadliest disasters in decades.

Speaking exclusively to Pakhtun Digital, Gandapur said that he himself is going to Peshawar to supervise the operation, and the provincial government will take the lead in providing any kind of help required to the neighboring country.

Highlighting his connection with the Afghan people, the Chief Minister said that the people of Afghanistan are our brothers and we stand with them in all situations.

Earlier, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly unanimously passed a resolution expressing solidarity with Afghanistan and giving the Afghan people visa-free entry into Pakistan for urgent treatment at local hospitals and medical centers.

The resolution further urged provincial and federal governments to dispatch relief teams, including doctors and essential medical supplies, to the affected region.

In another development, KP government’s Advisor on Health, Ihtesham Ali, has announced the establishment of a medical relief camp in District Khyber in a proactive move to safeguard the health of Afghan refugees during their repatriation.

The health advisor emphasized the need for urgent medical support, citing that vehicles carrying Afghan nationals are lined up from Ali Masjid to the Afghan border. “Ensuring their safe and healthy return is our responsibility,” Ali said.
