NEW DELHI (Kashmir English):  The newly released documents from the United States Department of Justice related to late financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein have ignited debate after an email referenced a possible contact linked to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi ahead of key political events in 2019.

The message, dated May 20, 2019, reportedly included a line stating “Modi sending someone to see me on Thursday,” in communication between Epstein and American political strategist Steve Bannon, just days before Prime Minister Modi’s second swearing-in ceremony.

Reports suggest that Epstein later texted Bannon about the meeting and mentioned India-related political context, though the full details and identity of the individual sent remain unclear.

The release of these Epstein files has drawn swift responses from Indian authorities. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has strongly dismissed implications of any improper connection or direct communication between PM Modi and Epstein, describing references in the email outside of a verified diplomatic context as “trashy ruminations by a convicted criminal” and urging the public and media to disregard them. The MEA noted that, beyond noting an official visit to Israel in July 2017, other allusions in the files hold no factual credibility.

Political reaction within India has also been mixed. Opposition figures have called for greater transparency about the context and any diplomatic engagements in question, while government spokespeople have reiterated that no substantiated links exist between the prime minister and Epstein beyond the contested passage in the released material.

The latest tranche of Epstein documents, disclosed by U.S. authorities under transparency directives, comprises millions of pages and includes communications mentioning numerous global figures in varied contexts. The release aims to shed light on Epstein’s network and interactions, though experts caution that not all mentions in these files equate to verified involvement or wrongdoing.
