MUZAFFARABAD (Kashmir English): Sardar Tanveer Ilyas ‘quits’ IPP according to sources, after the AJK Supreme Court overturned his disqualification, restoring his eligibility to contest elections.

Former Prime Minister of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), Sardar Tanveer Ilyas, has reportedly resigned from the Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party (IPP), according to sources cited by ARY.

Sources indicate that Ilyas has been in contact with various political leaders and is expected to announce his next move soon. His departure from the IPP follows a significant legal victory, as the Supreme Court of AJK recently overturned his disqualification, reinstating his eligibility to contest elections for public office.

The court’s decision came after Ilyas appealed against the disqualification ruling issued by the AJK High Court in a contempt of court case. During the proceedings, Ilyas sought forgiveness from the court, leading a full bench of the Supreme Court, headed by Chief Justice Raja Saeed Akram Khan, to nullify his conviction. The verdict stipulates that he will be eligible to contest elections after a month.

Ilyas, a prominent political figure in Azad Kashmir, served as the region’s 14th Prime Minister from April 2022 to April 2023. He was also the President of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Azad Kashmir from September 2021 until April 2023. Important political and administrative choices defined his time in office along with his leadership role in party matters.

The recent court ruling brought back speculation regarding his future political ambitions. Many observers wait to watch his future political moves since his disqualification ban has officially terminated. The powerful political status he maintains in AJK makes the direction he decides to take next highly influential for regional political developments.

There exists no official declaration from Ilyas about his future party membership yet and the political community remains active with speculation about which major party he might join. People believe he will make public statements about his political position during the upcoming days.

Through Sardar Tanveer Ilyas ‘quits’ IPP along with regaining his political candidate eligibility, he established himself as a strong player in AJK’s transforming political environment.
