SRINAGAR (Kashmir English): Political and legal experts and analysts have strongly rejected assertions made in an article published by Australia Today questioning the moral standing of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) on the Kashmir dispute, terming the arguments selective, misleading, and politically motivated.

According to Kashmir Media Service, experts and analysts said the article deliberately distorts historical and legal realities by portraying the OIC’s position on Kashmir as ritualistic while ignoring the core issue of India’s prolonged occupation, denial of the right to self-determination, and systematic human rights violations in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir.

Commentators rejected the claim that the OIC lacks relevance or legitimacy, noting that the organization represents the collective voice of 57 Muslim-majority states and has consistently highlighted Kashmir as an unresolved international dispute recognized by the United Nations.

They said dismissing the OIC’s statements as symbolic ignores its repeated calls for implementation of UN resolutions and protection of civilian rights in the occupied territory.

Analysts further criticized the article for selectively invoking UN resolutions while downplaying India’s failure to create conditions for a plebiscite and its unilateral actions of August 5, 2019, which were widely condemned by international bodies, including the OIC.

They said framing the Kashmir issue as an internal matter contradicts established international law and decades of UN engagement.

Legal experts also described the comparison with issues in other Muslim-majority countries as a diversionary tactic aimed at deflecting attention from India’s actions in Kashmir.

They stressed that human rights violations anywhere cannot be used to justify or obscure repression in IIOJK, where extrajudicial killings, mass arrests, demographic engineering, and suppression of dissent continue unabated.

OIC’s continued focus on Kashmir

The analysts maintained that the OIC’s continued focus on Kashmir reflects global concern over India’s occupation policies and warned that attempts to delegitimize the organization are part of a broader narrative to normalize grave abuses in the territory.

They urged the international community to see through such narratives and press India to fulfill its legal and moral obligations toward the Kashmiri people.
