MUZAFFARABAD (Kashmir Digital): The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has recently issued an Azad Kashmir weather advisory, warning the locals of unstable weather conditions, which accompany harsh thunderstorms and rains, hailstorms and strong winds. Considering the mountainous terrain probable landslides can also be expected as part of a wider weather system affecting the region from May 1 to 7.

According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department, Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) weather is likely to remain unstable over the coming period of time. Some areas are expected to receive more rain than others. The advisory highlights the risks of urban flooding, flash floods, and landslides in vulnerable zones of Azad Kashmir, urging residents to take precautionary measures and avoid unnecessary travel.

The NDMA’s National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC) has attributed the adverse weather in Pakistan to a moisture influx from the eastern regions and the Arabian Sea, intensified by rising temperatures and high humidity levels.

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has also echoed concerns, issuing a separate alert about strong thunderstorms lasting until May 4, with warnings extended to the hilly areas of the region.

The advisory also noted that lightning strikes from recent storms have already led to two deaths and injured 24 people, while nine buildings have sustained partial damage. Authorities are keeping a close watch to mitigate any risks associated with the incoming weather.

Beyond Azad Kashmir, other parts of the country are also bracing for impact. Rainfall and thunderstorms are forecast for Islamabad, the Potohar region, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, Karachi, upper Sindh, and parts of Balochistan. The severe weather is expected to begin in Karachi on the evening of May 5 and may persist for several days, bringing strong winds and increased humidity.

The Meteorological Department has further warned Karachi locals that the weather will feel hotter than the actual temperature, likely 37°C. High humidity could worsen discomfort during this period.

In light of the situation, residents across the country, especially in Azad Kashmir, are advised to stay alert, follow official instructions, and remain indoors whenever possible.
