MUZAFFARABAD (Kashmir English): The Supreme Court of Azad Jammu and Kashmir has rejected the contempt of court petition filed against Mushtaq Ahmed Janjua, former Chairman of AJK’s Ehtesab Bureau [Accountability Bureau].

During the hearing today, Azad Kashmir’s top court acquitted the former chief of state’s accountability watchdog. The Supreme Court heard the contempt of court case filed by former Prime Minister Chaudhry Tariq Farooq.

While pronouncing the verdict, AJK Supreme Court judges ordered the termination of the contempt of court proceedings against Janjua.

Mushtaq Janjua, a senior lawyer from Muzaffarabad and a close aide to Prime Minister Haq, was appointed to the position on February 10 this year. However, his tenure was marred by legal challenges questioning his eligibility and professional conduct.

In December last year, Mushtaq Janjua resigned from the chairman of Azad Jammu and Kashmir’s (AJK) top accountability body barely 10 months after his appointment by Prime Minister Chaudhry Anwarul Haq.

Janjua cited health issues and family obligations and submitted his handwritten resignation on official letterhead to AJK President Barrister Sultan Mahmood.

“Due to ill health and certain family commitments, I find myself unable to continue discharging the responsibilities of Chairman Ehtesab Bureau. Therefore, I resign from this office,” the letter wrote.

The resignation was promptly approved by the president and forwarded to the chief secretary for the issuance of a formal notification, his office confirmed.
