MUZAFFARABAD (Kashmir English): Two bodies buried under the rubble of the 2005 earthquake were found on Saturday during the excavation at a construction site in Muzaffarabad.
The bodies were recovered 28 years after the October 8, 2005 earthquake, the deadline in Pakistan’s history, which claimed more than 75,000 lives.
As per details, the body of one martyr was found intact even after twenty years. Police and ambulance were reached on the spot and the bodies were immediately transferred to the nearest hospital.
Local councilor Mahmood Baig Advocate said that DNA samples were taken and the bodies will be handed over to their heirs.
As the bodies were found, he relatives of those who went missing in the earthquake have started reaching the excavation site.
The district administration has stopped the excavations on site, citing the fear that more bodies are likely to be recovered during the excavations.
Local councilor said that there was a large building at this location that collapsed in the earthquake, where many students used to live. Many of whom were buried under the rubble of this building, he said.
Furthermore, the councilor announced that the bodies of the martyrs will be buried safely at this location after they will be handed over to the heirs on the basis of DNA samples.
Moreover, the administration has indicated that this location will be declared a cemetery as a Disaster Management Red Crescent official, Yasir Josh, said that the Red Cross had buried many bodies at this location.
