FATEHGARH SAHIB, India (Kashmir English): A 75-year-old Sikh woman donated her land for the construction of a mosque in a village in Fatehgarh Sahib district of Punjab in India, while Sikh and Hindu families provided the financial support.
According to Indian media, it all happened in Jakhwali village, which is primarily inhabited by a Sikh population, but also has Hindu and Muslim families.
While a gurdwara and a temple were present in the village, Muslim residents had to travel to a nearby village for prayers due to the absence of a mosque.
Bibi Rajinder Kaur, the woman who donated the land, said that she decided to give approximately 5 marlas of land for the mosque after seeing the difficulties faced by her Muslim neighbours.
Sikhs, Hindus, and Muslims live together in village
According to her grandson Satnam Singh, Sikhs, Hindus, and Muslims have been living together in the village for years and cooperate with each other on every religious occasion.
According to Indian media, the land was in Bibi Rajinder Kaur’s name and was legally transferred to the Muslim committee.
Monu Singh, a panch of the village and a family member, said that government land could not be given for religious construction, so personal land was donated.
Kala Khan, president of the mosque committee, expressed gratitude for the initiative, saying that relations between different communities are exemplary and he hoped that the construction of the mosque will be completed by February 2026.
He said that people of all religions contributed to the construction of the mosque, and so far, 3.5 lakh Indian rupees have been collected.
