ISLAMABAD (Kashmir English): With the winter at its peak, children’s health becomes a major concern for parents as they are particularly vulnerable and require more attention.

The drop in temperature, cold winds, and changed weather conditions often lead to colds, coughs, fever, and respiratory issues in children.

Young children, particularly whose immune system still developing, are especially vulnerable to seasonal illness.

Health experts suggest that the most effective way to prevent winter illnesses is timely precautions and small adjustments in daily routines.

Guide to keep children safe

Warm clothing

Ensure your child is dressed appropriately for cold weather by focusing on covering head, chest, and feet, as significant body heat is lost from the head.

Woolen caps, socks, and light, warm layers are excellent choices. Choose breathable, insulating fabrics and avoid overly bulky outfits that could lead to sweating and discomfort.

Avoid cold water

Bathing children with cold water during winter, or having them use it to wash their hands and face, may contribute to illnesses.

Likewise, certain low-quality candies and chocolates can irritate their throats and chests. A better approach is to offer children lukewarm water and simple, homemade meals.

Doctors emphasize that pneumonia is a potentially dangerous illness for children.

Key symptoms include rapid breathing, indrawing of the chest, fever, and extreme weakness.

If these signs appear, it is critical to seek professional medical help immediately rather than relying solely on home remedies.

Furthermore, vaccination against pneumonia is considered highly important for prevention.

Fever care

Giving antibiotics to a child with fever sans consulting a medical practitioner can be harmful.

During fever, dress children in light clothing, check their temperature regularly, and include nourishing foods like broth or soup in their diet. Consult a doctor if the fever persists.

Mild winter illnesses like colds and sore throat can often be managed with traditional remedies as giving children ginger and honey tea; warm milk with dates or dried apricots, and tea made with dry ginger and jaggery.
