ISLAMABAD (Kashmir English): The draft of the 27th Constitutional Amendment is likely to be approved by the federal cabinet today.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has summoned a cabinet meeting.
According to sources, the cabinet will be briefed on the draft of the 27th Constitutional Amendment in the meeting, and after the briefing, the federal cabinet will approve the draft of the constitutional amendment.
Sources said that the 27th Amendment will also be presented in the Senate session today.
Regarding the amendment, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif took the coalition parties into confidence.
In a meeting with the Muttahida Qaumi Movement delegation, he assured that the MQM’s local government draft would be included in the 27th Amendment, after which the Muttahida also supported the amendment.
He also promised to help the MQM delegation in obtaining the support of other parties.
According to sources, the MQM demanded from the Prime Minister that the local government formed after the elections be given financial, administrative, and political powers, the term of local governments should be 4 years and new elections should be held under a caretaker setup.
It should be noted that the ruling coalition is preparing to present the 27th Constitutional Amendment; however, the PPP has rejected all but one of the points of the 27th Constitutional Amendment proposal.
A meeting of the PPP Central Executive Committee was held regarding the 27th Constitutional Amendment, in which consultations were held regarding the constitutional amendment.
After the meeting, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto said that the government has planned to make changes in Article 243 and the Central Executive Committee has supported only this amendment.
Bilawal Bhutto said that the PPP rejects the clause related to provincial share and is not ready to support this proposal under any circumstances. The remaining points of the 27th Amendment proposal, including the change in the NFC formula, have also been completely rejected.
