LAHORE (Kashmir English): India has released more water into the Sutlej River which increased the flood fear in Pakistan, Indian High Commission stated on Wednesday.

The floodwater was released into the river which triggered the Ministry of Water Resources to raise a flood alert.

Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) confirmed that the additional outflow from India has raised the river flow, issuing warning of high flood levels at Harike downstream and Ferozepur downstream. Precautionary measures have been ordered to be taken by authorities to keep people and property safe.

India had released water into the Sutlej a day before, PDMA reported. At Ganda Singh Wala, the water flow has risen to 230,000 cusecs, while a high flood of 137,000 cusecs is being reported at Sulemanki.

Additionally, other rivers are also dealing with heavy inflows. At the Chenab River’s Marala, the discharge is 62,000 cusecs; at Khanki Headworks and Qadirabad Headworks, 98,000 cusecs and 98,000 cusecs respectively; and at Trimmu Headworks, 250,000 cusecs.

The PDMA also reported a record-breaking very high flood at Panjnad, where the flow of water reached 475,000 cusecs.

Moreover, heavy rainfall is expected in various parts of Pakistan increasing the flood fear. Residents are advised to avoid travelling towards river bodies, weak walls and roads.
