MUZAFFARABAD (Kashmir English): Heavy rainfall caused widespread havoc in Azad Kashmir early this morning, triggering floods in the adjacent drains of Goharabad east and west in the Jehlum valley around 4 am, as a result , water entered several homes, according to the state disaster management authority
The rail that came after the heavy rains was laid on the Goharabad West Link Road with debris, due to which this important road has been completely closed.
According to local residents and eyewitnesses, the situation initially looked like a cloudburst, which affected both areas of Goharabad. Several vehicles and shops were affected in the damage in Goharabad East.
There are reports that other houses and properties in the area have also been affected due to debris and water, however, the full details of the damage will be informed as soon as they are received.
No casualties have been reported so far, however, the local administration and rescue agencies are busy assessing the situation and relief operations are underway in the affected areas.
Earlier, Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) is currently experiencing ongoing monsoon rains, bringing both scenic beauty and potential danger to the region. The changing weather, marked by intermittent showers, high humidity, and occasional thunderstorms, has created an unpredictable atmosphere in areas like Muzaffarabad, Rawalakot, and Bagh.
According to the Meteorological Department, monsoon rains are expected to continue for the next 5 to 7 days. Weather experts say that strong monsoon winds, high moisture levels, and fluctuating temperatures are the key reasons behind this extended spell. Heavy rainfall with thunder and lightning is especially forecasted in Muzaffarabad, Rawalakot, and Bagh.
However, with the monsoon rains also comes risk. The district administration has issued alerts due to the dangers of landslides, overflowing streams, and traffic accidents. Rescue 1122 teams, local bodies, and the State Disaster Management Authority have been put on high alert to handle any emergency situations.
