MUZAFFFARABAD (Kashmir English): Due to the ongoing tension between Pakistan and India, the Indian authorities have released water into the Chenab River without any prior notification, causing a flood alert in the Akhnoor area of occupied Jammu near the LoC.

The unilateral release of water into the Chenab River by Indian officials has escalated tensions between the two countries, leading to accusations of “water terrorism,” according to Kashmiri media sources.

Media sites in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) have reported that the Akhnoor sector, which is close to the Line of Control (LoC), is experiencing flooding as a result of the sudden water release.

Kashmir Media Service says that the water level in the Chenab River is continuously rising, due to which citizens have started evacuating areas near the river.

It should be noted that India has previously released water into the Jhelum River without informing, which had caused moderate flooding in Pakistani areas.

Earlier, Pakistan had decided to form a think tank consisting of experts to review India’s suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty.

The think tank will give its opinion on the suspension of the treaty to the cabinet on an emergency basis, after which the Prime Minister will decide on further strategy based on the opinion of the cabinet experts.

On the other hand, legal consultations are ongoing in Pakistan on the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty by India on an emergency basis. The Ministry of Water Resources, Law and Foreign Affairs have done initial homework on the matter.

According to sources, it has been decided to issue a notice to India through regular diplomatic channels for a few days. The notice will seek concrete reasons for the suspension of the treaty. This move aims to give legal and moral justification to Pakistan’s position.
