KARACHI (Kashmir English): At least 11 people were killed as heavy rain, thunderstorms and gusty winds lashed Karachi on Wednesday.
The development was marked by widespread power outages, waterlogging and structural damage.
According to Rescue 1122 officials, most of the deaths were reported in rain-related incident in Baldia, where at least seven people were killed after a building collapsed near Mawach Goth.
Rescue 1122 spokesperson Hasseb ul Hassan said seven bodies had been shifted to the Civil Hospital, while more than three individuals were still trapped at the site.
Meanwhile, four more people were killed in several such incidents across the city, while over a dozen were injured
According to Chhipa Foundation spokesperson Chaudhry Shahid, a wall collapse near a house in Landhi’s Majid Colony, close to Baraq Pump, killed a husband and wife. The deceased were identified as 50-year-old Sher Wali and his wife Riazat Bibi.
In Korangi near Saddo Number-3, the roof of a house caved in, killing 45-year-old Shita, wife of Sarwar whereas a lightning strike claimed the life of 35-year-old Hazrat Umar, son of Atlas Khan in Malir near Nadi Yaro Goth.
Additionally, in Bhains Colony, the collapse of a compound roof left two people injured.
According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), wind speeds reached 97 kilometres per hour, while heavy rainfall and thunderstorm affected both suburban and urban neighborhoods.
Rain-hit Karachi areas
The rain was recorded in areas like North Nazimabad, Surjani Town, North Karachi, Clifton, Nazimabad, Cantt, Railway Colony, Delhi Colony, Scheme 33, Shaheed Millat Road, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Karachi Airport, Model Colony, Malir, Gulzar-e-Hijri, and Gulshan-e-Maymar.
Roofs were blown off, solar panels and signboards fell, windows were shattered as a result of the storm. Strong winds also uprooted trees in several localities.
Intense rainfall also disrupted Eid shopping, leaving many citizens, including women and children, stranded in markets, streets, and shopping centres.
