TATTA PANI (Kashmir English): Residents of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) urged the government to restore the historic Sehra Baoli Azad Kashmir, a forgotten heritage site that awaits preservation, once a royal retreat, as its neglect threatens both cultural heritage and tourism potential.
The beautiful valley of Jammu and Kashmir hosts Tatta Pani Dara Sher Khan which gained fame because of its natural wonders and its deep historical roots. The area contains various historical architecture, which is accompanied by step-wells and fine stonework carved structures built in the time when the Maharaja ruled. These historical monuments from the past represent both the artistic accomplishments and the craftsmanship of the time, but now receive no preservation care.
A historical Baoli situated in the Sehra sector stands as an architectural legacy marker along the ceasefire line in Tatta Pani Dara Sher Khan. The Department of Tourism and Archaeology together with the government have let this painterly structure endure years of neglect despite its historical relevance.
Maharaja Hari Singh, the previous ruling Maharaja of Jammu and Kashmir, constructed multiple baolis alongside gardens and different structures throughout the territory to demonstrate his devotion to his second wife Rani Begum. Rani Begum received her name attached to numerous historic sites which serve today as memorials to their royal background.
Rani Begum’s entourage used the Sehra Baoli as a resting area which provided refreshment while they traveled through the region. Inside this site stands an old peepal tree which provides shade along with its aesthetic value to the environment. Despite its substantial history and cultural value, Sehra Baoli Azad Kashmir exists in an abandoned state because no preservation measures or maintenance services have been implemented.
Sehra Baoli Azad Kashmir: Hidden gem awaiting restoration
Even in its neglected state, Sehra Baoli Azad Kashmir attracts tourists drawn by its historical significance and timeless charm. However, locals argue that its true potential as a tourist attraction remains largely untapped due to the lack of official recognition and restoration steps.
Residents, speaking to Kashmir Digital, expressed their disappointment over the government’s failure to preserve this remarkable piece of history. They urged the authorities to take immediate steps to restore and renovate the Sehra Baoli. Locals believe that with proper restoration, the Baoli could become a key tourist attraction, drawing history enthusiasts, travellers, and researchers alike.
For now, the historic Sehra Baoli stands as a silent witness to the past, awaiting the attention and care it rightfully deserves.
