ISLAMABAD (Kashmir English): Following the heavy rains in the federal capital, the water level in Rawal Dam has risen to dangerous level, making it necessary for the authorities to open the spillways of the dam.

The Rawal Dam spillways will release the extra water store in the dam as a precautionary measure and to avoid any unwanted situation.

The monsoon rains leads the water flow in Rawal Dam much higher than the usual flow.

According to the Irrigation and Water Management Authority, the water storage limit in the dam is 1752 feet, while the current level had exceeded 1750 feet, after which it was decided to open the spillways on an emergency basis.

However, Water is being released from the dam gradually to avoid flooding in low-lying areas. The administrations of Rawalpindi and Islamabad have been put on alert, and residents of low-lying areas have been instructed to be cautious and be prepared to relocate.

According to the Meteorological Department, there is a possibility of more rain in the next 24 to 48 hours, due to which the water level in Rawal Dam and other water bodies may rise further.

The public has been instructed not to go near the lake, rivers and dams, while an appeal has also been made not to listen to rumours and only follow the instructions issued by the district administration and relevant institutions.

On the other hand, Rescue 1122, Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) and other emergency agencies have been put on high alert so that any possible emergency situation can be dealt with in a timely manner.

Moreover, National Emergencies Operation Center (NEOC) of the NDMA has issued a wide-ranging impact-based weather alert warning of potential flash floods, urban inundation, and glacial water surges until July 25.

A powerful southwest monsoon system coupled with a westerly wave has prompted the NEOC to issue the alert.

The alert mentions vulnerable districts in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, Sindh, and Islamabad, where heavy rains are expected to disrupt daily life and pose serious risks to low-lying and mountainous communities.

NDMA has directed disaster management authorities to remain on high alert, expedite drainage clearance, and prepare emergency teams for rapid response.
