NEW DELHI (Kashmir English): In a recent development, the Indian opposition leader and member of the Indian National Congress (INC), Rahul Gandhi, has been arrested by police.

According to the sources, the arrest was made during a protest against alleged voter fraud while marching towards the Election Commission of India’s (ECI) office on Monday.

Besides Rahul and his sibling Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, the New Delhi Police arrested a number of opposition members of parliament (MPs).

Confirming the detention of opposition leaders, Joint Commissioner of Police Deepak Purohit stated that the politicians were detained and brought to a local police station.

The police officer, giving reasons for their detention, stated that the opposition did not have the permission required to organize a protest of such a magnitude and that only 30 MPs were permitted to march towards the ECI office and make a complaint.

Purohit’s comments follow after the INC‘s Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) started a march to the ECI office.

The political unrest in New Delhi involves Rahul’s fresh accusations against the governing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the ECI of having conspired to manipulate elections and having been involved in voter manipulation.

Last week, Rahul told an opposition huddle that there was a “gigantic criminal fraud” in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

He referred to a Karnataka survey which, in his opinion, found six major irregularities: double entries by the same voter, duplicate registrations in different states, fictitious addresses, bunching of bulk voters at one address, vague photographs on voter IDs, and abuse of Form 6 for registering first-time voters.

The politician also accused the poll body of designing a “choreographed schedule” for state assembly polls in league with the BJP and said that the ECI declined to provide digital copies of voters’ lists.

The ECI refuted the charges vehemently, describing the allegations as an “absurd analysis” and called upon the Congress leader to address this allegation
