MUZAFFARABAD (Kashmir English): An appeal has been filed in the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Supreme Court against the High Court’s decision to abolish the 1989 refugee quota.

Senior legal experts Sardar Resham Khan Advocate and Mehmood Akhtar Qureshi Advocate, on behalf of Qazi Imran and Chaudhry Abdul Wahid, filed an appeal against the High Court’s decision of August 18, stating that the status of 1989 refugees and 1947 and 1965 refugees is not equal.

The 1965 and 1947 refugees have been permanently settled in Pakistan and Azad Kashmir, while the 1989 refugees are still awaiting permanent settlement.

The admission process for their children in educational institutions has stopped due to the court’s decision, they said.

“Restore 6% quota for 1989 refugees”

The lawyers have requested the Supreme Court to restore the 6% quota for 1989 refugees so that the issue of their children’s admissions could be resolved.

“Orders should be issued to restore and implement the 6% quota until the permanent settlement and status of 1989 refugees are determined,” the appeal said. The hearing of the appeal is expected next week.

It is to be noted that recently, the Azad Kashmir High Court had issued a decision to abolish the quota system for jobs and make all appointments on open merit.
